The basics of jewellery care
Fine jewellery is made to last generations — but it does require a little attention. Good habits cost almost nothing and extend the life and brilliance of your pieces by decades.
What to avoid
The biggest threats to fine jewellery are not wear but chemicals and impact:
- Chlorine — found in swimming pools and spa water. Chlorine weakens gold alloys over time and can cause prong erosion. Remove jewellery before swimming.
- Household cleaners — bleach, ammonia-based products, and abrasive cleaners damage metals and dull stones. Remove jewellery before cleaning.
- Lotions, hairspray, perfume — oils and aerosols coat diamond surfaces and reduce brilliance. Apply these before putting on your jewellery.
- Physical impact — diamonds can chip at certain angles despite their hardness. Remove jewellery during heavy gardening, gym work, or contact sports.
Cleaning at home
A monthly clean maintains brilliance without professional help:
- Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap
- Soak the piece for 15–20 minutes
- Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub under the stone, around the prongs, and in any recesses
- Rinse thoroughly under clean warm water
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth or air-dry on a clean towel
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless your jeweller confirms they're appropriate for that piece — some stones and settings are not suitable.
Storage
- Store pieces individually to prevent scratching — soft pouches or a fabric-lined box with separate compartments work well
- Avoid leaving jewellery in direct sunlight for extended periods, as some gems can fade
- Keep jewellery away from extreme temperatures (e.g., on a heater or air vent)

Travel is when jewellery is most at risk. Use a rigid jewellery case in your carry-on bag (never checked luggage). Document your pieces photographically before travel for insurance purposes.
