Diamond Basics

Natural vs Lab Grown Diamonds

SAAT Gemology Team·5 min read

They are both real diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are not "fake" or "synthetic" in the way that cubic zirconia or moissanite are. They are real diamonds — same crystal structure, same chemical composition (pure carbon), same hardness, same optical properties. The only difference is where they grew.

Natural diamonds form deep in the earth over billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds form in controlled conditions in a few weeks. Both are graded the same way by the same labs.

How lab diamonds are made

Two methods dominate:

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) — recreates the natural diamond-forming environment with extreme pressure and heat. Crystals grow over weeks.

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) — uses a methane-rich plasma to deposit carbon atoms onto a diamond seed, building up the crystal layer by layer.

Most fine-quality lab diamonds today are CVD-grown.

Price comparison

For the same 4C specifications, a lab-grown diamond typically costs 50–80% less than its natural equivalent. That's the headline difference and the main reason many buyers choose lab-grown.

A 1.5ct, F colour, VS1 clarity, Ideal cut natural diamond might cost $14,000. The same lab-grown might cost $4,000.

Resale and long-term value

Natural diamonds historically hold their value better. Lab-grown diamond prices have been falling as production capacity grows, and resale markets are still developing.

If you view your diamond purely as a piece of jewellery, this may not matter. If you view it as a long-term store of value or a heirloom you'll resell, natural is the safer choice.

Environmental considerations

The environmental case is more nuanced than marketing suggests. Lab-grown diamonds use significant electricity, sometimes from fossil fuels. Natural diamond mining has improved dramatically over the past two decades, with many operations now carbon-neutral and rigorously regulated.

The most environmentally responsible choice depends on the specific producer in either category.

Which should you choose?

Choose lab-grown if: - Maximising size or quality within budget is important - You are comfortable with newer-market valuation - You prefer the sustainability narrative associated with lab-grown

Choose natural if: - Long-term value retention matters - You want a stone with a multi-billion-year origin story - You're buying as a generational heirloom

Both are valid. Both are beautiful. We sell both, with the same care and certification standards.
